Illinois Car Sales Tax Calculator

Illinois taxes dealer sales at 6.25% plus local taxes where they apply, and a trade-in comes off the price. Private sales work completely differently: you pay a flat amount from a state table based on the car’s age or price.

  • From 2020 through 2021 Illinois capped the trade-in credit at $10,000; that cap ended on January 1, 2022.
